Assignments for Tuesday May 4th

There are no reading assignments for Tuesday's class; just be sure to begin revising your research paper, which is due Thursday May 6th.

In other news, I have decided not to give a final exam during finals week. Instead, we're going to have a final project and accompanying in-class writing assignment. The first part of this final project is a portfolio. You'll need to collect all of your writing from the semester into a single folder and bring it with you to our last class on Thursday May 13th. In class, you will have one hour to write an analysis of your work over the course of the semester. For now, you should begin collecting all drafts of everything you've written this semester. I'll answer questions in class on Tuesday.

Discussion Board:
Read the following definitions of a "good" reader. Choose the four that you believe to be true. Briefly, explain why.
  1. The reader should belong to a book club.
  2. The reader should identify himself or herself with the hero or heroine.
  3. The reader should concentrate on the social-economic angle.
  4. The reader should prefer a story with action and dialogue to one with none.
  5. The reader should have seen the book in a movie.
  6. The reader should be a budding author.
  7. The reader should have imagination.
  8. The reader should have memory.
  9. The reader should have a dictionary.
  10. The reader should have some artistic sense.

6 comments:

  1. I agree with number: 7,8,2, and 9.
    7. The reader should have imagination because he should be able to illustrate the author's description of the setting and understand what is happening within the story.
    8. The reader should have memory because a good reader should always be able to recall in his mind what happened in the previous chapters where he left off to get a better understanding of the given scenario in the book. Also the reader should have the memory to remember the characters, plot, setting, and etc. of the book he read.
    2. The reader will get a better understanding of the situation and the plot if he or she pretends that himself or herself is the main character.
    9. The reader should have a dictionary because not knowing the unfamiliar vocabularies can hinder his sense of understanding what he is reading.

  2. the definition of a good reader to me are as follows:
    2. the reader should identify himself or herself with the hero or heroine.
because it helps understand things from a different angle.
    4. the reader should prefer to a story with action and dialogue to one with none
because than you could relate it to something else a d understand better.
    7.the reader should have imagination.
    helps visualize in mind
    8. the reader should have memory
very important because this way you could connect the dots and get the main point

  3. 2. The reader should identify himself or herself with the hero or heroine.
By identifying yourself with the hero or heroine of the novel or book that you are reading, it allows to to pay close attention to personality of the hero/heroine and also makes you able to relate to their actions with your own
    7.The reader should have imagination.
by having an imagination, the book or novel you are reading should be able to transform before your eyes; you can put yourself into the situation of the author, live the novel through the eyes of the author's character (and it kind of contrasts with identifying with heroine and hero).
    8. The reader should have memory.
Recalling what you have read is an important component of effective reading. Being able to give a summary and remember the content of what you read by making it possible to think analytically and critically.
9.The reader should have a dictionary.
Having a dictionary allows the reader to look up words they are unsure about and by doing this it broadens the readers vocabulary.

  4. 2.The reader should identify himself or herself with the hero or heroine.
it is much easier to get a better understanding of the story if you put yourself in a characters position.

    7.The reader should have imagination.
the reader should have an imagination because it it easier to sort of live within the story, it kind of makes u feel like your in the story , and makes it much more enjoyable and easier to understand.

    8. The reader should have memory.
It very important for a reader to have memory while reading a novel because it ruins the whole point of reading if your not going to remember the story.

9.The reader should have a dictionary.
a dicitionary is very important while reading beacause you might come across words that you are not familar with and you will be able to look them up and help u understand the novel, article, magazine, etc better

  5. The four terms in which I believe to be true as to being a good reader are numbers 2,7,8, and 9.

    2. I believe that the reader should identify himself or herself with the hero or heroin because I think it would make for a more interesting piece of work. It would keep the reader involved and wondering what is going to happen if the reader could relate to the characters in the story.

    7. I believe the reader should have an imagination because maybe the author is writting about something that would require the reader to have one. If the reader foes not have a good imagination, then the reader would not enjoy the full extent of the story. The reader needs to open his horizons and should be able to enter the authors world through there imagination.

    8. I believe the reader should have memory because that way they could follow what's going on within the story. I read books, but once I pick it up I don't read it from front to back. I read a chapter here then pick up the book the next day and read another chapter. If I didn't have a good memory I would have to go back and read that chapter over again.

    9. I believe the reader should have a dictionary just because if there is a word that they don't understand, they are able to look up the definition. That one word could be an important part of the story.

  6. I agree the reader should have a good imagination because not every book is in black and white. Memory is also important you have to remember what you are reading. Dictionaries are helpful for you to look up words you don't know.
