For Thursday, please read Discrimination at Large by Jennifer A. Coleman (pgs. 198 - 200). Be prepared to engage in group discussion during class.
Also, be prepared to share your research topic and thesis statement with the class. (It'll be interesting to discover what people are covering.)

Do you agree with the author's assertion that jokes and slurs about overweight people are "as wrong and damaging as any racial or ethnic slur"? Why or why not?

I agree with the author's assertion that jokes and slurs about overweight people are "as wrong and damaging as any racial or ethnic slur". I agree because regardless whether it’s racial or a negative comment about someone’s weight it equally affects the person. Making fun of a persons weight makes that person feel like if they don’t belong and affects the person ability to socialize because of the preconceived notions that where instilled by the public and even the media. This equally affects the person because I believe it addresses them on a personal note.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree that jokes and slurs about overweight people are as wrong and damaging as any racial slur. I believe that being obese is a matter of ones heredity passed on from his parents. Similar to obesity, race is also dependent on the genetics of ones parents. So discrimination on race, and overweight feature are the same.
ReplyDeleteI agree that jokes and slurs about overweight people are as wrong and damaging as any racial slurs. I believe that obesity is caused by ones heredity passed on from his parents. I know that also genetics determine ones race, or skin color. So, people have no choice but to accept their color skin and their physical traits because they're born with it. When one faces discrimination because of his skin color, its not so different from being discrimated from being overweight.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely. I think that any comments aimed to degrade or mock a person are offensive. Racial discrimination and joke overweight people is equally offensive. Overweight is a condition that is often considered "a disease" which means, that people should feel bad enough, for another one to come to contribute their suffering. Usually overweight people have complex, it is wrong to joke with their condition. It's unmoral to do it.
ReplyDeleteI'm absolutly agree with author because i think joking about human being how he is is Immoral. Beeing overweighted not makes person less then the other one that could allow to joke about him
